Social Action Council
In 2006 the Emerson Board of Trustees formed the Social Action Council (SAC) to assume the functions and responsibilities of both the Outreach Board and the Community Services Committee, including those responsibilities under the Active and Passive Witness Program. SAC is an umbrella organization that provides support and coordination for all of Emerson’s Social Action groups.
SAC’s vision is a Church Community: Where everyone is committed to service, within and beyond the Emerson Congregation, based upon our seven UU principles; and Where we are leaders in the Houston Community and share, individually and collectively, financial and time resources with organizations systematically and democratically chosen and sponsored by the Emerson congregation.
Caring for others and the Earth is fundamental to Unitarian Universalists. In fact, Unitarians have led several of the great social movements in American history. For example, Susan B. Anthony led the movement for women’s right to vote, Dorothea Dix championed reform of the nation’s mental hospitals, and Nobel Peace Laureate Emily Greene Balch pressed for greater acceptance of refugees during World War.
Social Action Priorities SAC identifies and provides opportunities for Emersonians, young and old, to make a difference locally and globally so that everyone can live a life of service. Emerson Social Action programs address the following needs of our community: Hunger, Education, Housing, Environment, Human Rights, Health, Multiple Needs. The projects, programs and organizations that we support can be found at Emerson Social Action Programs. This support can be meeting a one-time or continuing social need.
SAC Membership SAC is actively seeking other new members for the committee and some of its hand-on projects. If you want to help grow Social Action at Emerson, the Houston community awaits you. From one time participation to on-going activities we have a spot for you. The Committee meets first Sunday of the month. For additional information contact Jane Zachritz.
