Taking a Leap of Faith: Awaken Interest
The Leap of Faith (LoF) team’s first recommendation is to adopt a principle called Emerson AIMS. That cycle is part of the LoF final recommendations posted online in Taking a Leap of Faith. In this section, we begin examining the cycle with the call to Awaken.
The LoF team found our congregation believes that there are people in the greater Houston community who would benefit from an affiliation with Emerson in particular and Unitarian Universalism in general. It is up to us to awaken their interest in Emerson.
Through improved visibility of our belief, both on the campus, on our Web site and within the community, we can increase awareness of what we believe and attract visitors to Emerson. Our communications and membership committees make explicit efforts to attract visitors. The recent update to the Web page is in line with the LoF recommendation to keep a fresh Web presence. Our facilities and grounds groups keep the campus attractive. Our members who are involved in the community in social action attract attention to our active faith.
What can you do to help awaken interest?
There are specific actions individual members can take. We need faith statements from members to post on our Web site. Write a short piece about
what brought you to Emerson or the UU faith, or what motivates you to keep coming. Feel comfortable in describing your membership in the UU faith to friends and acquaintances—this does not mean you have to proselytize, just to have a few sentences ready to describe your faith when the occasion arises.
