Green! Emerson Unitarian Universalist Church members strive to be “green” in all we do. The church voted not to connect the new Delaney Hall with the older Westwood Hall because we would have to chop down a tree. Although we do have a professional to tend to the major gardening chores, a stalwart grounds crew of Emersonians still weed, plant and water. In the garden between Westwood Hall and Bering Drive is a charming installation of a young girl reading on a bench, installed in memory of Jana Joseph. Near by is the Memorial Garden, where plaques remember former Emersonians. The entrance to the Memorial Garden is marked by a pair of kopjafas, presented to Emerson by Endre Magy, minister of our partner church in Transylvania, in appreciation for our helping them obtain their Prayer House. The two kopjafas represent Emerson and St. Nicholas and our enduring partnership in our faith tradition. In the garden between Westwood and Delaney Halls is a demure sculpture of St. Fiacre, seventh century monk and patron saint of gardens, installed in honor of Ruth Fogel. The young people contributed the granite monument which offers an inscription from Emerson, “ I call upon you, the young, to obey your hearts and the nobility of this land.”
We are proud of our campus which is virtually an oasis in the shadows of the Galleria.
