Focus Issue: LEED Certification

Completed in 2004, Delaney Hall received the prestigious LEED Certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) from the United States Green Building Council for sustainable design and construction methods, including energy conservation and usage of recycled building materials. Developed by the US Green Building Council, LEED is a national standard for developing high-performance, environmentally sustainable buildings.

Delaney Hall is the first church building in the US to be certified and the third building of any kind in Houston to achieve this certification. Thanks in part to a bequest from Rudy and Mary Liz Weichert, we were able to take advantage of the excellent design work of Ray Bailey Architects, whom the Ministry for Earth challenged to design a building as green as possible without additional cost. They met our challenge to be lean and green and produced a building that is beautiful, functional, and energy efficient.

Landscaping With Native Plants
As part of our LEED Certification, Emerson has landscaped its grounds with native or highly adapted plants. Thanks to Carol Huelbig for working with the landscape designer. See Texans for Alternatives to Pesticides for more info.

Renewable Energy
To satisfy LEED E&A Credit 6, the church purchased a 50% offset—totaling 185,975 kWh, for two years from Green e-Certified American Wind Energy in Boulder, Colorado.
