Focus Issues are topics about which we choose to educate ourselves and others with the goal of achieving positive and lasting change. For example the UUA’s study/action issue for 2006–2010 is Peacemaking. In 2003–06, it was was The Threat of Global Warming/Climate Crisis. (Resource packets containing lists of readings, videos and more; science supplements; and Statements of Conscience on these issues are available on the UUA website at www.uua.org/csw and on the UU Ministry for Earth website.
Below are summaries of the Focus Issues Emerson’s Ministry for Earth currently promotes. Click a topic below to learn more:
Eco-Spirituality
Many of us seek a reconnection with nature and the world around us. We hold a simple celebration at each Solstice and Equinox, to help us acknowledge that we are a part of the natural world and are influenced by it, as were our ancestors. Air Quality
Houston is now the most air-polluted city in the U.S. Our work on this issue also helps reduce global warming.
Energy Efficiency
As part of the Green Sanctuary certification process, we undertook an energy audit of Emerson’s buildings in 2001. Members continue to work on reducing energy usage (air conditioning, lighting, heating, and so on). Delaney Hall was designed to be more than 30% more efficient than a building built to code. In many rooms, motion sensors turn off the lights when no one is in the room. Automatic thermostats turn off the air conditioning or heating when no one is in the building. Carbon dioxide monitors reduce the use of outside air (which usually is much hotter or colder than air already inside the building), but when the CO2 levels reach a certain point, fresh outside air is brought in.
Recycling
In concurrence with our LEED certification requirements, Emerson Church has an onsite recycling program with designated areas for collection and sorting of recycled materials. Need to recycle a computer and/or electronic waste? We have some great recommendations for recycling in Houston. Click here for detailed information.
Tree Canopy
Houston’s canopy of trees has declined 16% since 1975, resulting in major economic costs. EMFE has participated in many tree-planting events since 2000. Click here for further info.
